In many in-situ cooling TEM experiments the temperature is measured at the back of the holder and not at the sample. What's the temperature at the sample? What's the temperature profile along the holder? What are the key sources of loss, and how can they be thoughtfully minimized? In this chalk talk we'll derive, solve, and investigate the properties of a simple differential form expressing heat transfer in in-situ TEM cooling holders, gleaning insights along the way into holder design, tip temperature estimates given only measurements at the back of the holder, and the physics of heat loss in the TEM.
