In my PhD, I also independently proposed and produced proofs of concept of a hybrid sectioning approach to volumetric electron microscopy: combining magnetic collection of mechanically cut sections with repeated cycles of Broad Ion Beam (BIB) milling and SEM imaging.
In 2020 I joined forces on this approach with a team at Janelia Research Campus, HHMI, composed of K. Hayworth, D. Peale and led by H. Hess. The team had also independently developed a similar hybrid approach using Gas Cluster Ion Beam (GCIB) milling.
We are all now co-developing IBEAM-MSEM: it currently combines MagC, BIB milling and Multibeam scanning electron microscopy.
