I guess I really became became an electron microscopist doing my PhD in Materials Science at Liverpool in the late 1980s, and after a few postdoctoral positions (Ohio State University, then back at Liverpool again) moved to industry in the form of the Caswell research centre of Marconi for something more permanent, or so I hoped. However after a decade the company collapsed and subsequent years under different managements were marked by rounds of redundancies. I came back to academia in 2007 and started at the University of Warwick in 2008. Since then I have been developing my research interests.
