Dr. Heckman began her career working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The goal of the project was to convert preneoplastic stages of lung cancer to in vitro culture and make the resulting lines available for research. She became interested in the problem of understanding the properties that were lost when cells turned cancerous. She developed optical and computing methods that, when combined with statistical classification methods, were useful for solving phenotypes. Phenotypes are the basis of an assay that is now used to identify chemicals that may have usefulness as drugs. Quantitative solution of features and phenotypes may also have broad applications as quality control measures.
