Characterisation Research Director
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation
Clayton, Victoria, Australia
Colin is a senior principal research scientist with the Commonwealth Science Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), based in Clayton, Victoria. He is currently the Research Director of Characterisation which encompasses microanalysis, x-ray diffraction and tomography research across laboratories in three states. These are the key characterisation facilities for Minerals and Mineral Processing problems within CSIRO. Colin has a strong interest in the application of high-resolution microanalysis, mapping in the electron microprobe to solve industrial problems related to the minerals industry. He has led the development and successful commercialisation of integrated cathodoluminescence and soft x-ray emission spectrometry systems for electron microprobes. He has worked on the microanalysis and description of over 25 new minerals many of which had significant water contents making them a challenge to analyse. He has a H-index of 27. In 2022 his contribution to microscopy and microanalysis has been awarded by him receiving the Peter Duncumb Award for Excellence in Microanalysis from the Microanalysis Society (US).
