Steven L. Goodman, PhD, is Chief Scientific Officer of Microscopy Innovations, LLC. His career in microscopy began decades ago at the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, MA) where he used LM, TEM, and SEM for neurobiology research. Then, as a graduate student and postdoc at Wisconsin, he developed correlative microscopy instrumentation and methods combining multi-modal Video-Enhanced Light Microscopy, High Voltage TEM, Low-Voltage FE-SEM and Colloidal Gold Labeling in studies of the micro and nanostructure of cellular interactions with implantable medical devices. As a professor of Physiology and Biomaterials (University Connecticut) he utilized EM to understand artificial heart valve induced thrombosis and developed multi-photon optical methodologies for biomimetic nanofabrication. He left academia to develop new imaging technologies and methods, including LEAP atom probe tomography and confocal LM; taught and consulted on microscopy for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications; and created the capsule-based mPrep System for specimen preparation.
He has over 100 scientific publications and holds two dozen patents on microscopy devices including the mPrep System, biomimetic materials, and multiphoton nanofabrication. He also served as scientific editor for two microscopy journals: Cells and Materials and Scanning Electron Microscopy. He earned his BS at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and both his MS and PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
