Following an undergraduate in Material Science in Cambridge he moved to the University of Oxford to study irradiation damage of novel steels. Following post-doctoral study at Oxford he moved to UKAEA to take up a 3 year EUROfusion fellowship focusing on irradiation damage in fusion materials. Having developed expertise in analytical transmission electron microscopy, atom probe and nanoindentation, he is now at UKAEA’s MRF and oversees the sample preparation, mechanical testing and microstructural characterisation of radioactive and non-active specimens.
